ISRC and UPC Codes Explained (You Don't Need to Buy Them)

ISRC and UPC codes are the invisible infrastructure behind every royalty payment you receive, and most independent artists never need to think about them beyond knowing they exist.

What each code does

An ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) uniquely identifies a specific recording, while a UPC (Universal Product Code) identifies the release as a whole, the single, EP or album containing that recording.

Why platforms require them

Streaming platforms use these codes to track plays and attribute royalties correctly. Without them, a platform has no reliable way to know which recording, and which artist, a stream belongs to.

You don't need to buy them separately

Some services charge extra for these codes. Upload Nations issues both ISRC and UPC codes for free with every release, no separate registration, no added fee.

It's a small technical detail, but getting it right the first time avoids royalty tracking issues down the line.
